Sent: January 13, 2010 Contact: Scott Strasemeier (410) 293-8775 Dobbs Named Metropolitan College Player Of The Year By The Pigskin Club Of Washington, DC ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs has been named the Metropolitan College Player of the Year by the Pigskin Club of Washington, DC. Dobbs will receive the Frank P. Bolden Award at the 72nd Annual Awards Dinner on Friday night at the Capital Hilton Hotel in the District of Columbia. The Pigskin Club will also honor the Washington, DC All-Metropolitan High School Football Team, Alabama head coach Nick Saban as the National Coach of the Year, Alabama running back Mark Ingram as the National Offensive Player of the Year, Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh as the National Defensive Player of the Year, the Washington Redskins Brian Orakpo as the Redskins Most Valuable Player and the Baltimore Ravens Ray Rice as the Ravens Most Valuable Player. Dobbs led Navy to a school record tying 10 wins in 2009, a seventh-consecutive Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, a seventh-consecutive bowl game, a victory over Notre Dame for the second time in three years and a 35-13 thrashing of Missouri to win the Texas Bowl. Despite playing with a broken kneecap over the final six games and missing the majority of two games, Dobbs scored a school-record 27 touchdowns and set the NCAA record for single-season rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. The record was previously held by Chance Harridge of Air Force (2002) and Florida’s Tim Tebow (2007). Dobbs needs just 12 rushing touchdowns next year to set the NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in back-to back years. The current record is 38 set by Stacey Robinson of Northern Illinois (19 in 1989 and 19 in 1990) and Eric Crouch of Nebraska (20 in 2000 and 18 in 2001). Dobbs ranked No. 2 nationally in touchdowns scored (27) and points per game, averaging 12.46 points per contest. He finished 12th in points responsible for per game (rushing and passing touchdowns), averaging 15.23 points per contest. He has scored four or more rushing touchdowns on four different occasions during his career, including three times this year. No other Navy player has more than one-career four-rushing touchdown day. Dobbs played a role in 33 of the Mids’ 51 touchdowns this year (27 rushing, six passing) and his 198 points responsible for in 2009 is a school record. He has been responsible for 252 points in his career, which is tied for the third most in school history. His 162 points scored this year stands second all-time on the Mids’ single-season points scored list, trailing Bill Ingram who scored 174 points in 1917. Dobbs is one of only four different players (Chris McCoy twice) in program history to reach 100 points in a season and one of only two to score more than 120. His 210-career points rank as the third most in school history. His 35-career rushing touchdowns are second on the Navy all-time list, while his 35-career total touchdowns are also second. He needs 25 rushing touchdowns next year to break the NCAA career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, set by Eric Crouch of Nebraska (59 from 1998-01). He currently stands 17th on the all-time list. With a current streak of five straight 100-yard rushing days, he is the first Navy quarterback to record four or more consecutive games over 100 yards since quarterback Brian Madden, who rushed for over 100 yards in the final five games of the 1999 season and the first two games of the 2001 season (he missed all of 2000 with a knee injury). His 1,203 yards rushing in 2009 rank eighth on Navy’s single-season rushing chart and are the 20th most rushing yards in NCAA history by a quarterback. He is just the third quarterback in school history and 37th quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in a single-season. Chris McCoy rushed for 1,370 yards and passed for 1,203 yards in 1997, while Craig Candeto rushed for 1,112 yards and passed for 1,140 yards in 2003. He has thrown just four interceptions in 121-career attempts (.033), the lowest interception percentage in school history. He is averaging 10.3 yards per pass attempt in his career, which is the second-best average in school history. His 2,234 yards of total offense in 2009 ranks second all-time at Navy for a single season behind Chris McCoy (2,573 in 1997). His 2,941 yards of career total offense ranks third behind Chris McCoy (5,958 yards, 1995-97) and Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (3,277, 2005-08). Dobbs has compiled a career record of 10-3 (.769) as a starter, rushing for over 100 yards in nine of his 13 career starts and scoring at least one touchdown in all 13 of his career starts. -Bill Wagner |
