| AAAgain Posted: February 18, 3:06 pm | (permalink) | (1 comments) Gov. Martin O’Malley will get to continue trumpeting one of Maryland’s more wonky accomplishments over the next year, as the state has maintained its AAA bond rating, just of seven to do so. Basically, the top rating means Maryland can borrow money at lower interest rates, a key event as officials want to boost the economy with construction. “While Maryland is not immune to the effects of this national recession, together we have made the difficult decisions to protect our State’s long-term financial health, invest in our future, and protect our most valuable asset – the skills and strength of our people,” O’Malley said in a statement.-Liam Farrell |

Cycle-riding Astle pushes Sunday sales - 2010-02-18
I am commenting on this story that posted around 5 Feb 2010 in the Annapolis version of this paper. It was brought to my attention by a reader who contacted me because I am a declared candidate for Senator in District 32.
I find it interesting that first there is a 'Sunday' restriction to sales of cars and motorcycles to begin with. Why? I would be in favor of allowing motorcycle dealers and car dealers to conduct sales on Sundays if they chose to do so. I don't understand why Sen Astle is so against car dealers being added to his bill. It seems that it would only rally support from the car dealers to his bill. Then Sen DeGrange states he doesn't want dealers to incur 'greater operating costs' and worries that 'if one dealer opens on Sundays, others will feel pressured to follow suit'.
I feel that if car and motorcycle dealers want to conduct sales on Sunday, why not? Why do the incumbent legislators I mention above feel it is the governments job to control their business practice? Whether a car or motorcycle dealer opens for sales on Sunday and incurs operating costs because of that, should be up those dealerships. That is what we call a market based society. Government managed markets are what I saw in "socialist" East Berlin, Germany from 1987-1990 while stationed in West Berlin.
