County hospitals took hits financially

Stock market fluctuations to blame for $36M in '09 losses, officials say

Anne Arundel County's two hospitals lost more than $36 million in the last fiscal year, a figure that administrators at both facilities attribute to stock market fluctuations.

During fiscal 2009, Anne Arundel Medical Center lost $28.2 million, while Baltimore Washington Medical Center suffered a loss of $7.9 million, according to financial officers at both hospitals.

Hospital administrators submitted these figures to the state Health Services Cost Review Commission, which sets hospital rates and reviews their financial performance.
