Larry Drane was something of an icon at Riviera Beach Elementary School when he died of a sudden heart attack on May 1.

The school's chief custodian for 29 years, he was beloved not only by students but also by their families.

"Riviera Beach is a very stable community. A lot of parents and grandparents also attended the school, so many of them had a connection to Larry," Riviera Beach Principal Kay Panagopulos said.

But Drane wasn't just a veteran of the school. He was also a Vietnam veteran.
