24,000 signatures submitted to county

Elections board has 20 days to verify the first phase of Stop Slots petition

Opponents of slots at Arundel Mills mall said they submitted nearly 24,000 signatures yesterday to the county Board of Elections calling for a November referendum.

David Garreis, the board's deputy director, said petitioners brought in nearly 3,000 pages of signatures Thursday.

"Each page has lines for 10 signatures. Some of the pages may have two names, some have all 10," Garreis said.

The deadline to submit the petitions was yesterday. County elections workers now begin verifying the signatures, which they must do within 20 days, Garreis said.
