Sports comment: Staying hydrated critical for young athletes

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a summer series on sports-related illnesses and injuries that affect high school and youth league athletes.

As the dog days of summer approach, it's important for those who either practice or compete in the heat and humidity to be aware of the potential health risks.

There are several warning signs that, when heeded, can prevent more serious problems for the athlete. Having educated coaches and parents who know what to look for can be a key to avoiding potential harm.
