Security lights to brighten Brooklyn Park

A countywide program to combat crime by setting up security lights will kick off at the end of October in Brooklyn Park.

Next year, about 220 security lights will be installed countywide, and about 30 existing street lights will be upgraded. The project is expected to cost about $300,000 for the installation and upgrade, plus another $42,000 in maintenance costs.

The first 12 lights will go in Brooklyn Park, where five homicides have been reported this year, said County Councilman Daryl Jones, a Severn Democrat who represents the area.
