I saw the "Star Trek" movie on Saturday and went grocery shopping on Sunday.

Thanks to a new handheld scanner available at the Giant Food on Crain Highway in Glen Burnie and several other county locations there was an odd sense of blending the two experiences.

All I needed was dilithium crystals and some photon torpedoes.

The idea behind the Scan It system is to pick one up as you walk in, scan items as you put them in your cart, bag up your items as you scan them. End result: cut down on the time you spend at checkout.

My 11-year-old son found it particularly cool, because the device looks and feels like a toy....
