Peering across the table at some of Anne Arundel County's most decorated baseball players, Matt Disher didn't think he had a chance.

It was a pleasant surprise.

Disher became Annapolis High School's first grand-prize winner at the 18th annual Friends of Joe Cannon Stadium's Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet last night in a crowded room at Michael's Eighth Avenue. Disher accepted a $3,000 check he'll be able to put toward his education at the Naval Academy.
