Linthicum: Concert season discount through May

Subscribers to the upcoming concert season of the Performing Arts Association of Linthicum can receive a $4 discount if they sign up before the end of the month.
The association's concerts are performed at the Chesapeake Arts Center, 194 Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park.

PAAL is offering tickets to the five-concert series for $45 for those who subscribe by May 31. After that date, the season will cost $49.

The association also sells single tickets to all of its concerts. They are $15 for guests of a PAAL subscriber and free for students who are accompanying a subscriber. All other tickets are $22 for a single show.

The 2008-09 schedule is:

The Tamburitzans will perform songs and dances of Eastern Europe and neighboring cultures at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Anna Binneweg will conduct the Londontown Symphony Orchestra and music director and conductor JoAnn Kulesza will guide the Arundel Vocal Arts Society in presenting popular opera arias at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12. The show is linked to the celebration of Linthicum's 100th year.

Carla Dirliker and Michael Gallant will present love songs for the holidays at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Harpist Bronn Journey and his wife, Katherine, a singer, will present a show of pop, classical, folk and sacred music at 3 p.m. on March 15.

Sue Matthews will present the show "Girl Singers," a tribute to three women who were among the most popular women vocalists of the swing era of the mid-20th century: Doris Day, Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney at 7:30 p.m. on April 4.

Also during the season, the association will offer two concerts that are free and open to the public. These shows will feature the U.S. Navy Band and the U.S. Army's Jazz Ambassadors. The dates are still to be announced.

LSIA meeting

Organizers of tonight's meeting of the Linthicum-Shipley Improvement Association say there will be a brief discussion about crime in the community and the creation of a committee to combat the problem. The LSIA will meet at 7:30 p.m. today in the media center of Lindale Middle School, 415 Andover Road.

The committee will address concerns about break-ins and incidents such as a recent major drug bust in the community and a mugging outside the Xtra Mart on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard.

The primary business scheduled for tonight's meeting will be the election of LSIA officers and a vote on the association's budget.

Attendees are asked to take nonperishable food for donation to the North County Emergency Outreach Network.

For more information, call LSIA president Ken Glendenning at 410-859-8459.

Homemakers' 35th

Past and present members of the Crestwood Homemakers Club are invited to the group's 35th anniversary celebration, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Candle Light Inn, 1835 Frederick Road in Catonsville.

Anyone planning to attend is asked to call Sue Sabo at 410-859-5920.

Strawberry festival

If it's the middle of May, it's time to start thinking about strawberries.

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society will hold its 18th annual strawberry festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 14 at the Benson Hammond House, located at the corner of Andover Road and Aviation Boulevard.

There will be strawberry wine, jam and shortcake, as well as crafts and activities for children. There also will be tours available of the historic home on the grounds of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Admission is free.

Free parking will be available at the soccer field near Signature Flight Support on Aaronson Drive.

The rain date will be June 15.
